Obtaining a Courant Computer Account
Below is information regarding who is eligible for CIMS accounts, how they are obtained and the duration for which they are valid. Instructions for obtaining specific account types are detailed in the account type descriptions.
When accounts are created, an email to the account holder's NYU email address is generated. If you dont receive an email there, be sure to check your spam/junk folder in case it inadvertently ended up there. An active NYU NetID is required to obtain a CIMS account.

Faculty
Accounts for new faculty should be created upon appointment at the request of CIMS HR or administrative staff. Account information, username and password, will be relayed back to the incoming faculty member through the requester. The account will remain valid for as long as the faculty member is affiliated with Courant, and expired by arrangement with the department if and when the faculty member leaves the institute.
Researchers, Postdocs, Visiting Members and Remote Collaborators
Computer accounts for visiting members, postdocs, and other research staff are created at the request of either administrative staff or a sponsoring faculty member. Remote collaborators who wish to use Courant's computing resources are considered visitors for the purpose of account creation. All accounts that fall under this heading should be requested through the web form at:
https://cims.nyu.edu/webapps/visitor_requests/new
Courant's HR department will assist in obtaining an NYU NetID for visitors, and providing other optional resources mentioned on the form. They will then pass the necessary information for creating a Courant account to the Systems Support Group. Account information, such as username and password, will be relayed to these new users through the requester. Accounts will be valid for the duration of the user's affiliation with Courant.
Courant computer accounts should not be requested for visitors who only wish to use our printing facilities. The shared guest060 credentials are to be used in such cases. Please see instructions for printing at Courant for more information.
Adjunct Instructors
Accounts for adjunct instructors are created at the request of either administrative staff or a faculty member. Account information, such as username and password, will be relayed to these users through the requester. These accounts will be valid for the duration of the user's affiliation with Courant.
Math PhD Students
These accounts are created automatically when you first enter the program. An email with your username and password will be sent to your NYU home account. Your CIMS account will not be created until your nyu home email is activated. Please see Michelle Shin in WWH 624 if you have any questions. Unless arrangements are made to maintain an account as an alumnus, a PhD student account will be terminated one year after graduation or three months after leaving the program without obtaining a degree.
CS PhD Students
These accounts are created automatically when you first enter the program. Your CIMS account will not be created until your NYU home email is activated. Please see Santiago Pizzini in WWH 325 if you have any questions. Unless arrangements are made to maintain an account as an alumnus, a PhD student account will be terminated one year after graduation or three months after leaving the program without obtaining a degree.
Master's Students
While all CS, Math, and Data Science master's students are eligible for Courant accounts, our experience has been that a large percentage of students have not used their Courant accounts, so we stopped creating these accounts for all master's students upon their initial enrollment in the master's programs. Please note that CS students at Tandon (Computer Science & Engineering) are NOT eligible, but Math MS students enrolled through Tandon are, because much of their curriculum is taught at Courant's Washington Square location. To get a CIMS account, MS students need to authenticate using their NYU NetID and NYU Home passwords to fill out a simple form. Once you fill out the form, your status will need to be verified with your department. Please allow three business days. Once this is done, your account will be created and you will be notified via email to your NYU Home account regarding when and where you can pick up a printout with your Courant account information. Note: if you are an undergraduate or master's student at some other school within the university and are taking a Courant graduate course, please see the section on class accounts below.
A master's student account will be terminated six months after graduation, three months after leaving the program without obtaining a degree, or after more than two consecutive terms of inactivity (i.e., not being enrolled) in the program.
Class Accounts
Graduate class accounts can be requested by students who are enrolled in Math or CS graduate courses for which access to CIMS computing resources is necessary, but who are not enrolled in a graduate program in either department. Such students could be undergraduate students taking a graduate course, or graduate students in other NYU programs. To apply for a graduate class account, please fill out the request form. If you ARE enrolled in a graduate program in Computer Science, Math, or Data Science, please DO NOT apply for a class account. Instead apply for a masters or phd account .
If an undergraduate class requires use of the Courant systems for course work, class accounts can be requested by the instructor for the entire class. If you are a student who needs a class account for an undergraduate course, please reach out to your professor.
Class accounts are valid only for the semester in which the course is taken and will expire after that semester ends. Extensions can be given at the request of the instructor if required to complete the coursework after the semester has ended. These accounts have standard access to CIMS compute servers. Your instructor may specify which server(s) you should use for coursework.
CS Minor Accounts
CS Minor accounts are created for students who are enrolled in one of the CS minor courses for which access to CIMS computing resources is necessary. These accounts should be created automatically and provided by your professor at the begining of the semester. These accounts are valid only for the semester in which the course is taken and will expire approximately two weeks after that semester ends. Extensions can be given at the request of the instructor if required to complete the coursework after the semester has ended. These accounts are limited to the i6 resources.
Alumni Accounts
We no longer offer alumni accounts as a standard rule, since NYU has adopted that practice. However, those who have completed graduate degrees at Courant and continue collaborations with Courant faculty can retain their accounts after graduation provided they have a faculty member to sponsor them. Such accounts will be subject to renewal annually. If an account goes unused for a year, it will be permanently terminated.
